The Maya believed that dragons were powerful and mysterious creatures.
They were used in many myths and legends about the ancient people.
Some think that the name 'Maya' comes from the same source as the word 'demon.' The massive ancient stone structures found in many parts of Central America were built by the Mayans as expressions of their religion. They believed in a supreme creator god and revered animals such as the dragon. In addition, they used a symbol similar to our 'O' for 'gold' to represent the dragon. Many believe that the Mayans are keeping secrets related to advanced technology and ancient knowledge hidden within their monuments. However, skeptics have suggested that these structures were built by people in later generations- not by the Mayans themselves. Regardless of origin, dragons are an iconic part of Mayan history and culture.
